Incident Simulation
Code Red: Citizen Records Exposure Simulation (Government)
When a real exposure event hits, tool knowledge is not readiness — coordinated execution is. Code Red is where certified professionals rehearse that execution before the breach. This is a scenario-based simulation of a real citizen and government records exposure event inside a Microsoft Azure public sector environment — designed for certified professionals who are ready to apply their tool knowledge inside a single, end-to-end incident response scenario.
Rather than teaching Microsoft security tools in isolation, Code Red guides learners through a realistic breach narrative — from citizen and program data placement and exposure risk, through attacker behavior and detection, to investigation, governance validation, AI-assisted triage, and remediation reasoning.
You have completed the certifications. You know the tools. Code Red is where that knowledge becomes operational judgment — when the incident is real, the citizen records are exposed, and every role in the room has to act together under public accountability pressure.

Where Certification Ends and Operational Readiness Begins
Microsoft security certifications are among the most rigorous and respected credentials in the industry. They establish the tool knowledge, configuration skills, and security principles that every practitioner on this page has invested in developing.
Code Red is the operational layer that follows.
Where certification builds individual tool competency, Code Red builds cross-tool incident judgment — the ability to use Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Purview, Security Copilot, and Copilot in Azure together, simultaneously, inside a single high-pressure citizen records exposure scenario.
The self-paced format provides the cognitive and operational foundation. Hands-on labs, live investigation, and execution-based response are delivered through SecureStack™ Virtual Instructor-Led (VILT) and Onsite Instructor-Led (ILT) engagements.
The Scenario Microsoft Certification Prepares You For — And That Code Red Simulates
Code Red activates all certification skills simultaneously inside a single scenario — citizen records already exposed, Sentinel alerts active, Purview scanning, Security Copilot surfacing recommendations, Copilot in Azure ready for remediation input, and agency leadership asking whether disclosure and oversight notification obligations have been triggered.

Every certification, learning path, and course you have completed is an active component of the Code Red simulation. The more you bring, the more you execute.
Module Structure
Module 1 — What Code Red Means in Government Cybersecurity
Why citizen data exposure is a crisis of public trust, not just a technical event. How public sector breach response differs structurally from other industries. The roles engaged during a Code Red event and why each carries a different accountability and oversight frame. How SecureStack™ frames incident response as a coordinated, cross-role effort where no single tool and no single role has the complete picture.
Business Impact: Early misinterpretation or delayed response escalates audit, oversight, and public trust risk before the first containment decision is made.
Module 2 — Understanding Citizen and Government Data and Where It Lives in Azure
What qualifies as sensitive citizen and program data and why it has high value to attackers and competitors. Where citizen records appear across Azure services — Blob Storage, SQL Database, Cosmos DB, App Services, Azure API Management, and Data Lake. How attackers identify high-value citizen data fields early in a breach.
Business Impact: Accurately mapping citizen data residency determines exposure scope, FISMA disclosure obligations, and the speed of a defensible response.
Module 3 — How Citizen Data Is Exploited in the Cloud
How storage misconfigurations become citizen data exposure vectors. Why bulk access and rapid data retrieval are the earliest behavioral indicators of exfiltration. What the attacker sees in your environment — and why that perspective changes how you investigate.
Business Impact: Recognizing attacker behavior patterns early supports faster, more defensible decision-making before oversight and audit timelines begin.
Module 4 — Cognitive Interoperability® in Action
How Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Sentinel, Purview, Security Copilot, and Copilot in Azure operate together during a Code Red government event. Why cross-tool signal integration produces better decisions than any single tool can support alone. How KQL connects detection logic to investigation evidence. How Security Copilot synthesizes signals across tools into human-readable incident understanding.
Business Impact: Cross-tool reasoning prevents premature escalation and produces the audit-ready incident record oversight bodies require.
Module 5 — Remediation, Validation, and Operational Readiness
How storage misconfigurations are corrected and validated post-containment. How technical findings translate into agency, audit, and oversight communication. What operational readiness looks like after a Code Red citizen records event and what it takes to sustain it.
Business Impact: Validated remediation protects against repeat incidents and the audit and oversight exposure that follows an unresolved citizen data breach.
What You Actually Do in VILT and ILT
You do not watch a demo. You build, trigger, and investigate the incident yourself.
-
Resource Group and Environment Setup — You provision the Azure resource group that serves as your incident environment. Not a pre-built lab. You configure it from the start so you understand the architecture before the breach occurs.
-
Microsoft Defender for Cloud Configuration — You enable and configure Defender for Cloud, establish your security posture baseline, and identify the misconfiguration that becomes the citizen data exposure vector.
-
Log Analytics Workspace Setup — You deploy and connect the Log Analytics workspace that receives telemetry from every tool in the stack. Without this, nothing else in the investigation works.
-
Storage Account Configuration and Citizen Record Ingestion — You configure the Azure Blob Storage account, apply access policies, and ingest citizen and program record sample files in PDF, CSV, and JSON format. These are the files the simulated attacker will access.
-
Logic App Design and SOC Alerting — You build the Logic App that monitors for abnormal storage access and fires a real-time alert to a Microsoft Teams SOC channel. When the simulated download event triggers, your channel notifies the team — exactly as it would in a live environment.
-
Rapid Download Event Simulation — You execute the simulated exfiltration event. This generates the telemetry, the alerts, and the incident queue your investigation works from.
-
KQL Detection and Investigation — You implement a customized KQL analytics rule inside Microsoft Sentinel that detects the rapid citizen data access pattern specific to this scenario. Then you run the same KQL in Logs to validate detection scope, identify which files were accessed, and build the evidentiary timeline. Detection and investigation are two separate KQL actions — you perform both.
-
Microsoft Sentinel Incident Review — You triage the Sentinel incident, work through the alert timeline, correlate the signals, and determine the confirmed scope of citizen record exposure.
-
Microsoft Purview Governance Validation — You run a Purview sensitivity scan against the affected storage account to validate whether the exposed files contain regulated citizen or program records. Governance signals typically appear in Sentinel approximately 10 to 15 minutes after a scan completes. You work with that timing reality because it exists in production environments too.
-
Security Copilot Investigation — You use Security Copilot investigation prompts to synthesize cross-tool signals into a structured, human-readable incident narrative. This is Cognitive Interoperability® in practice — human judgment working with AI-generated synthesis under time pressure.
-
Copilot in Azure Remediation Guidance — You use Copilot in Azure to validate your remediation reasoning, confirm corrective actions for the storage misconfiguration, and generate post-incident remediation documentation.
-
Final Validation and Incident Closure — You confirm that no citizen data exposure risk remains, validate that no abnormal activity persists, ensure oversight and disclosure obligations are satisfied, and prepare executive-ready incident summaries, audit evidence, and defensible reporting documentation required for formal closure.
